Hello and welcome to
Oxford University Cross Country Club’s website. I’m Dave, the
Captain for the 2010-11 season. OUCCC is a fantastic and friendly
club that caters for everyone, regardless of ability or experience.
You’ll find a huge range of people here, from international
athletes with buckets of experience and always ready to offer a
helpful bit of advice, to relative newbies who just enjoy going for
an easy run. We’re always eager for new members and it’s not
unknown for people to join in training with us mid-season. We race
over cross country in Michaelmas and Hilary terms, then on the track
and road in the summer, but there is no pressure to compete. Just
come along to some of our training sessions and enjoy it - you don't
even need to be a member.
As with all Oxford
sports, the Varsity Match against Cambridge is the highlight of the
season. It’s a prestigious and historic event held in late
November, but unlike other sports anyone can compete in ours, whether
it’s for one of the selected teams or the always-entertaining mob
matches, and we need as many runners as possible. But there are
plenty of other things going on too throughout the year: lower key
races every term, fantastic socials, formal meals, even pub golf and
the occasional Beer Mile! We have a Training Camp too, held just
before the start of Michaelmas term, on which absolutely everyone is
welcome to come- we’ve even had record numbers of freshers along in
recent years. Details are available on the website here
Overall, OUCCC is a
great way to make friends (some of us do do more than just run!) and
enjoy sport. You’ll get to know Oxford like the back of your hand
through our club runs, fully understand the importance of ‘Shoe-ing’,
and perhaps even get your hands on some silverware. Look forward to
seeing you at training!
Dave

Cross-country is one of only fourteen Full Blue sports in the University and one that consistently maintains an extremely high standard of competition. Many of our athletes regularly compete at national, regional and county levels, with some of our best having run internationally. One does not have to look too far into the past to find some almost 'household' names of British running: Richard Nerurkar, Roger Bannister and Chris Chataway all spring to mind. Both the men's and women's side of the club contain current members with international experience.
However, OUCCC thrives on having a large membership: Whatever your standard, OUCCC will try to cater for you. The Club fields five men's teams and three ladies' teams against Cambridge in the December Varsity matches and consistently competes to a high standard in the British Universities' Cross-Country Championship (both men's and women's teams are regular medal contenders), but, in most fixtures, anyone who wants to compete can do so. It also has a number of guaranteed entries for the London Marathon, and we have had many strong runners in this event recently.
The Club has over 100 members which, supplemented by a similar number in our sister club, OUAC,
means that cross-country is an excellent way of meeting and socialising
with people from outside your college or course. Plenty of social
events are on the cards, no doubt at great detriment to our running!
If you are interested in finding out a little more about the origins of
one of the oldest cross-country clubs in the world, here is a brief history of OUCCC.
